Genem were initially engaged by Gilson College to provide an initial design, based on which a budgetary figure would be established. The design involved the creation of a new technology wing, replete with the necessary equipment and textiles, and including the roadworks and accessways around the building.

Upon receiving a budgetary figure for their proposed new wing, Gilson College applied for and received the appropriate funding in two separate phases. Genem worked with the College to ensure work only began once both phases of funding were received, in order to complete the design as one project.

The college had requested a modern-style building as part of their brief, which Genem succesfully provided. The design of the new technology wing was set out to be functional as well as striking and modern, making it an extremely attractive building that circumvents the usual 'dull' stigma associated with technology and trades.

An innovative core feature of the technology wing is the inclusion of a fully-equipped commercial kitchen, one of the very few schools in Victoria to have one. Genem dutifully supplied the college with the kitchen, as well as provided operable doors so that the kitchen can open out into a courtyard-like space, to add the multifunctionality of a cafe setting to the wing.
